The United Nations Global Compact operates in Italy through the Global Compact Network Italy (GCNI), an organization set up in Foundation in June 2013 after ten years of activity as an informal group.

The GCNI primarily works to promote the UN Global Compact and its 10 Principles at national level, increasing institutional dialogue, producing knowledge and disseminating good practices. To date, more than 60 business and non-business entities (private foundations, business associations, universities, etc.) have joined the GCNI.

The Network's work plan is based on information, study and support initiatives focusing on the broad thematic spectrum of sustainability and corporate responsibility (human rights, work, environment, anti-corruption, reporting, supply-chains, etc.). The large number of Members and the heterogeneous composition of the GCNI make it possible to activate multi-stakeholder partnerships and collective actions within the Network in pursuit of common or shared goals.

The GCNI is also committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted on 25th September 2015 by the UN General Assembly with the aim of eradicating extreme poverty, ensuring peace and prosperity and enhancing human development at global level by 2030. In this regard, from 2015 the GCNI's activities have been focused on developing shared projects on the SDGs, towards the promotion of a more widespread and effective engagement of small and medium-sized firms on the Global Goals, and towards the valorisation of Network’s Members successful experiences on sustainability.
